I'm going to take the fact that I can't pull the map up at all as a sign that the servers are being pounded with attacks from the Huns.

Up to this point I had it down to a science:

(a.) If I want to look at the map, the map will not load

(b.) Once the map finally loads:
. . . if it lets me click 5 times in a row, it's about to dun me with the 10 second penalty
. . . if it lets me click 10 times in a row, it's about to accuse me of running a bot
. . . if it lets me click 15 times in a row, the map will stop loading again for about 2 minutes.
. . . if it lets me click 20 times in a row, I'm in the ocean.
